More accustomed to life on the pitch, Bath Rugby Legends Matt Banahan and Duncan Bell are going head to head for a unique battle of a very different kind – to see who creates the best beer!
With the help of Wadworth, one of the Club's main partners, "Team Bell" and "Team Banahan" have brewed two very special, limited edition beers – "The Belly Buster" and "The Jersey Flyer" - and it will be up to the supporters of Bath to pick their favourite.
The two players collaborated with Wadworth Brewer Colin Oke to create two brews that both replicated what the players like in a beer, with an added dash of their personalities thrown in for good measure.
"Creating a beer isn't something you generally get to do as a rugby player'', said Matt, "but this has been a really fun and different experience for us. The Wadworth guys are so knowledgeable and have helped us a lot. Now it's all about finding out which our supporters like best – mine or Belly's!"
Supporters will be given the chance to sample the brews and vote for their favourite at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, when Bath host Cardiff Blues, kick-off 15.00. They can also cast their votes after the game by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
"The Jersey Flyer" brings Matt's big and bold personality to life in an English bitter with both fruit and bitterness on the palate. A malty sweetness gives way to a peppery note for a smoother finish.
"It's been a really fun experience, and I've loved being involved," added Duncan. "The supporters at the Rec have always been fantastic, and it will be interesting to see whose brew they prefer on the day – I would definitely say mine!"
Bath legend Duncan's "Belly Buster" is full bodied and has plenty of character. A golden, best bitter with a citrus zing and additional spiced hops, the brew has a little toasted malty sweetness that fades in the clean and dry finish.
The winning brew will be announced soon, with the Rec's favourite being brought back and put on sale for all to enjoy!
As a Bath Rugby fan himself, brewer Colin also found the experience an enjoyable one: "The opportunity to utilise my brewing expertise to create personalised beers for two rugby legends has been a real honour,'' said Colin. ''Of course, I like both brews equally, but I'm intrigued to find out who comes out on top!''
Tickets are still available for the game, so if you'd like to have your say, as well as enjoy a great day out, call the Bath Rugby Ticket Office on 0844 448 1865 or click here.
