The University of Bath were narrowly beaten in their first ever encounter against Swansea University in the BUCS Super League last Wednesday.
The Blue and Golds started the game with great momentum with real intent in attack - splitting defenders superbly from a line-out play that launched them up the field, earning themselves a penalty. From the resulting penalty Bath scored the opening try of the game after a power driving maul. [0-5]
Some excellent counter-attack opportunities for Bath went to waste, as easy field position was gifted to Swansea which resulted in a nice try in the corner. [7-5]
Some ill-discipline from Swansea provided some relief for the Blue and Golds, as they struggled to gain any momentum from the scrum. For University of Bath, history seemed to repeat itself when another driving maul was finished in the corner [7-10].
University of Bath were left frustrated themselves as the visitors gave up possession and failed to launch their attack which gifted Swansea a foothold in the game with a penalty kick at goal. [10-10]
The last 10 minutes of the half saw Bath with another score near Swansea’s line to utilise their destructive maul skills and this was followed up just five minutes later with a sneaky dummy maul that resulted in another try a few phases later. Morris added both conversations. [24-10]
However, the final moments of the half were Swansea’s, as they too capitalised on some ill-discipline to score near the posts from a well defended driving maul. [24-17]
Bath were under pressure early in the second-half but despite the Blue and Gold frustrating the home team for many phases, a lapse in defensive and numbers out wide allowed Swansea to go over. [24-24]
The Blue and Gold added another, this time with a neat line out attack which split the Swansea defence into pieces - although being stopped just short of the line. The constant pressure being built saw Swansea’s discipline break, as Bath scored yet another driving maul in the corner. [24-29]
After a period of sustained pressure Bath extended the score through a penalty kick at goal, sending the visitors eight points clear. [24-32]
As the game entered the final quarter, the Blue and Gold continued with applying pressure on the host with their kick chase game. As a result, Bath spilt ball led towards an opportunity for Swansea to perform a dummy maul play in the corner which led to their score. [29-32]
Despite disturbing the Swansea line out, the reoccurring theme of giving space out wide too easily haunted University of Bath as another try was conceded and converted. [36-32]
The final moments of possession were dominated by the hosts, as they played very narrow rugby with their pack, resulting in the game’s final points with a penalty kick at the sticks for Swansea. [39-32]
