Sports stars take on inaugural Cycle to Gloucester fundraising challenge

14 April 2014

Olympic star Heather Fell joined 50 riders including former Bath Rugby players Danny Grewcock, Lee Mears, John Hall and David Trick on Saturday as they embarked on Bath Rugby Foundation's inaugural Cycle to Gloucester fundraising challenge.

The challenge saw riders leave the Rec on April 12th as they cycled the 50 miles to Gloucester Rugby's Kingsholm Stadium in time to watch the highly anticipated derby match between old rivals Gloucester and Bath. Following an evening in Cheltenham celebrating Bath's victory they gingerly embarked upon the 50 mile return trip on Sunday morning. The ride raised vital funds for Bath Rugby Foundation, who in their 10th year continue to work with and positively impact on the lives of children and young adults in the local community.

Danny Grewcock explained why working with the Foundation is so important to him as a former Bath player: "Bath Rugby Foundation has always played a huge part in the lives of the Bath players as they assist in the amazing work that's achieved in the local community. As a retired player my new role is to help with the fundraising and again put myself through the pain of physical exercise without the preparation and training I would have done as a professional player."

Olympian Heather Fell, added: "Since getting involved with Bath Rugby Foundation for last summer's 'Ride Across Britain' I've had the chance to witness the great work they do and how it supports young people in our city. As a result of last year, I now love any excuse to cycle; combine that with raising money for a brilliant charity, supporting Bath Rugby in the local derby and it was a weekend I could not miss."

Bath Rugby Foundation enhance the lives of young people through sport, with a particular focus on those with social and other disadvantages. It motivates, raises self esteem and confidence, and improves life skills in young people by impacting positively on educational achievement and social interaction. Funded through donations, sponsorship and fundraising, the Foundation also provides opportunities for organisations and individuals to fulfill their community, charity and volunteering objectives.
