Spandler and Graham score in Team Bath win

16 November 2022

Ten Bath Rugby Academy players started and another appeared from the bench as Team Bath saw off Nottingham in their latest BUCS Super Rugby outing.

Hooker Jasper Spandler and back row Mackenzie Graham were both on the scoresheet in the 28-10 victory – the University of Bath’s fifth win out of seven matches.

Spandler was joined in the front row by Archie Stanley and Archie Griffin while Eddie Erskine, Thompson Cowan, Ethan Staddon and Graham were also in the pack.

Sam Harris started at fly-half with Louie Hennessey at outside centre and Byron Lloyd-Gilmour at full-back. Murdoch Lock was named as a replacement.

The Bath Building Society-sponsored visitors – high on confidence after impressive wins against Durham and Loughborough – got off to a flying start, forcing a penalty inside the opening couple of minutes which they kicked to touch before unleashing their line-out drive to score the opening try through England Under-20s’ Spandler.

Fellow club teammate Harris added the conversion for Team Bath, whose early pressure resulted in home second row Charlie Jackman being sin binned. However, the visitors were unable to take advantage and it was Nottingham who notched the next points through a penalty.

Team Bath regained the initiative and extended their lead midway through the first half with an excellent try from Ethan Hawtin following an incisive line break, Harris again adding the extras.

Determined defending prevented Nottingham pulling a try back before Team Bath rounded off the half in fine style, going over for their third try through Graham which Harris converted to make it 21-3 at the interval.

Nottingham cut the gap with a converted try, but Team Bath defended well to thwart any hopes of a comeback before securing a bonus point when replacement hooker Duncan Hood touched down 12 minutes from time, Alfie Garside adding the conversion.

Team Bath are back on home soil on Wednesday 23 November when they welcome Swansea to the Sports Training Village. Kick-off is 18:30 and admission is free.
