So Long, Farewell…

26 April 2012

As the season draws to a close, so does some of the Bath Rugby players' time here at the Rec. We thought we'd sit down and have a quick chat with some of those who will be leaving us about their time here in the Blue, Black and White.

Andy Beattie

What's been your favourite game in the Blue, Black and White?  There's been a few, my debut against Leeds, the semi-final against Biarritz, but it has to be the Heineken Cup quarter final in 2006 where we went up to play Leicester at the Walkers Stadium and won.

What's been your funniest memory of your time here at Bath?  Probably watching Grewy try to eat Mark Connors's scrum cap at the Rec against Northampton!

What will you miss most? I'll miss the banter and camaraderie amongst the boys, but probably match days at the Rec – there's no better feeling than running out to a packed out Rec, with the great supporters cheering you on.

What does the future hold for you? I'm going to stay living and working in Bath, we've just bought a new house down here, so I'll be sorting all that out! Then, hopefully I'll move into a career in the financial service industry.

What would be your Bath Rugby dream team?
That's tough! Am I allowed a bench? Ok, here goes...

15. Matt Perry, 14. Iain Balshaw, 13. Mike Tindall, 12. Olly Barkley, 11. Nick Abendanon, 10. Butch James, 9. Michael Claassens; 1. David Flatman, 2. Lee Mears, 3. Matt Stevens, 4. Danny Grewcock, 5. Steve Borthwick (Captain), 6. Gareth Delve, 7. Michael Lipman, 8. Zak Feaunati.

16. Pieter Dixon (Captain of the bench), 17. David Barnes, 18. Duncan Bell, 19. Stuart Hooper, 20. Nathan Thomas, 21. Martyn Wood, 22. Alex Crockett, 23. Joe Maddock.
And I'd be Head Coach!

Duncan Bell

What's been your favourite game in the Blue, Black and White?  Unquestionably it was the Quarter Final of the Heineken Cup against Leicester at the Walkers Stadium. We were under the kosh for large parts of the game and after a series of scrums went down to 13 men for the last few minutes. Everyone was huge that day and I remember the final whistle and mobbing Chris Malone and Pete Short. Unbelievable feeling.

What's been your funniest memory of your time here at Bath? There have been so many and every day has its funny moments, but seeing David Barnes's reaction to being flicked in the plumbs in a game of touch was eye wateringly funny. He reacted as if someone had murdered his dog. No one could break them up because everyone was doubled over with laughter.

What will you miss most? The boys. Every retired player says it, but the banter amongst the lads is brutal but also something special. However, it's not really something you can take into a new office environment!

What does the future hold for you? There's a next? Why didn't someone tell me?! I'll be running my own Financial Services company specialising in Mortgages and Life/Home Insurances. I'll be working on my own, for myself, so I'll need all the help I can get! www.bellfinancialservices.co.uk *hint hint* Special rates for #bathfamily!!!

What would be your Bath Rugby dream team? I've gone with boys I've played with at the Club so...

15. Matt Perry, 14. Nick Abendanon, 13. Tom Cheeseman if for nothing else then for the hit on Martin Corry Quarter Final v Leicester, 12. Olly Barkley, 11. Lee "Ferrari" Best for 20 mins, Joe Maddock for 60, 10. Butch James, 9. Michael Claassens, 8. Simon Taylor, 7. Michael Lipman, 6. Andy Beattie, 5. Steve Borthwick for 60 mins, Stuart Hooper for 20, 4. Danny Grewcock, 3. Matt Stevens, and I'll do 20 mins off the bench, 2. John Humphries for 20 mins, Lee Mears for 60, 1. David Flatman for 60 mins, David Barnes for 20, Kit Technician - Eduardo Williams

Matt Carraro

What's been your favourite game in the Blue, Black and White?  I think it would be a tie between the two big wins over Wasps at Twickenham the last two seasons. They were amazing team performances and the chance to play at Twickenham in front huge crowds was amazing.

What's been your funniest memory of your time here at Bath? Probably watching David Barnes score what I'm pretty sure was his only try in professional rugby. He then proceeded to push off all the boys that ran in to congratulate him, so he could perform one of the worst try celebrations I've ever seen!

What will you miss most? The amazing friends that my wife and I have made over the last three years - you become so close to everyone when you're part of a team and we'll really miss that.

What would be your Bath Rugby dream team?

1. Davey Wilson, 2. Lee Mears, 3. Anthony Perenise, 4. Danny Grewcock, 5. Ryan Caldwell, 6. Francois Louw, 7. Jules Salvi, 8. Simon Taylor, 9. Michael Claassens, 10.Butch James, 11. Tom Biggs, 12. Matt Banahan, 13. Myself (!), 14. Joe Maddock, 15. Nick Abendanon

Pieter Dixon

What's been your favourite game in the Blue, Black and White? Bath v Leicester 2008 – it's always good to beat the Tigers, and I got on the score sheet too!

What's been your funniest memory of your time here at Bath? It was during the same game when Mark Bakewell (our former forwards coach) ran onto the field when Butch scored the winning try and did a skip and a jump right in front of Ben Kay under the polls, just to rub it in!!

What will you miss most? The players and all the banter for sure! Also just the city of Bath, it's been my second home for the last few years and I've loved it!

What does the future hold for you? I'm looking forward to getting married on the 9th June!

What would be your Bath Rugby dream team?

1. Matt Stevens, 2. Lee Mears, 3. Duncan Bell, 4. Danny Grewcock, 5. Stuart Hooper, 6. Andy Beattie, 7. Michael Lipman, 8. Simon Taylor, 9. Michael Claassens, 10. Butch James, 11. Matt Banahan, 12. Olly Barkley, 13. Matt Carraro, 14. Joe Maddock, 15. Nick Abendanon

16. David Flatman, 17. Ben Skirving, 18. Justin Harrison, 19. Daniel Browne, 20. Shaun Berne, 21. Tom Cheeseman, 22. Andrew Higgins

Lewis Moody

I am hugely disappointed not to have been able to play as much as I would have liked at Bath due to injury, and that is something that will always annoy me, but I am really excited about the future of Bath and hope to be a part of it.

What's been your funniest memory of your time here at Bath? My funniest memory was probably my first training session when I accidentally hit David Barnes in a rather sensitive part and he didn't get up for 5 minutes – no-one realised what had happened and were just getting stuck into him.

What will you miss most? I think I will miss training and playing with the lads the most. The competitive desire never dies and it is hard to realise I will never get to play competitively again. Finding something to replace that feeling is very hard!

What does the future hold for you? I loved every minute of my career and am now looking forward to the future. I am hoping to stay involved at Bath next season somehow, and will be spending the next 12 months figuring out what direction to head in career wise.

What would be your Bath Rugby dream team?

15. Matt Perry, 14. Nick Abendanon, 13. Jeremy Guscott, 12. Phil de Glanville, 11. Simon Geoghegan, 10. Mike Catt, 9. Richard Hill, 1. Gareth Chilcott, 2. Graham Dawe, 3. John Mallet, 4. Danny Grewcock, 5. Nigel Redman, 6. Steve Ojomoh, 7. Andy Robinson, 8. Ben Clarke
