Jamie Roberts is confident that the Blue, Black and White can build on their recent defensive displays and make the most of their attacking opportunities as Bath welcome Clermont Auvergne in the Heineken Champions Cup at the Rec this evening (kick-off 19:45).
Following two narrow defeats, the Welsh international is well aware of the need to produce a performance and believes the pressure can only help the side to get a result in front of the home crowd.
Roberts said: "If we lose this week then we are out of Europe and that's the pressure on everyone. Obviously, those first two weeks were disappointing for us, both Ulster at home and Harlequins away, we couldn't get over the line on the scoreboard.
“It's do or die for us this week and the lads know that. We feel those pressures and we have done everything within our powers to prepare as well as we can for this game, and we can't wait to take it to Clermont Auvergne."
Having played in France for two seasons with Racing 92, the centre admits that Bath Rugby will need to be at their very best if they are to overhaul last season’s Challenge Cup champions.
He continued: "We can expect a very good rugby side. Clermont for the last few years have been one of the best sides in Europe, both in the domestic league in France and in the Heineken Champions Cup.
“Every year they are there or thereabouts come the knock-out stages. We knew when this draw was made that these matches were going to be pretty significant with the outcome of the pool, and now we have a double header against arguably one of the form sides in Europe.
“Clermont have a depth of quality in the forward pack and danger in behind. They have half-backs that can control the game very well, so we are under no illusions. It's going to be a huge test this evening and it is going to bring out the best in us.
“We've been very meticulous in our planning but we have to deliver tomorrow night. We are massively looking forward to it, Friday night lights, down at the Rec against a French side in Europe, you can’t ask for more than that as a player.
