Record number of men step out to raise funds for two local charities

29 February 2016

Five hundred and thirty men took to the streets of Bath in the fourth annual Bath Men's Walk to show their support for two local charities.

The eight-mile event, which starts at Winsley and finishes at the Rec in Bath, was organised by Bath Rugby Foundation and Dorothy House Hospice Care. This year, thanks to the efforts of all who took part, they have raised over £45,000 to help their work in the local community.

The event was officially started by ITV weatherman Bob Crampton, who set the walkers off on their way. During the walk, Foundation rugby coaches and representatives from Dorothy House joined the troops to share stories of where the money goes and the fantastic work each charity carries out in the local area.

The walkers took approximately two hours to complete the route – with a short pit stop at The George! They were greeted with a well-deserved pie and a pint at the Rec, ready to watch England v Ireland in the Six Nations.

Bath Rugby Foundation General Manager Mandy Gardner said: “Bath Rugby Foundation are hugely grateful to everyone who donned their walking boots to raise funds for us, and for Dorothy House. This money will allow us to continue to work with some of the most vulnerable people in our local community.”

Emily Knight from Dorothy House Hospice Care said: “This is our fourth year of the Men’s Walk, but our 40th year as your local hospice. Our birthday year is off to a great start and we’re thrilled that hundreds of chaps turned out to walk the eight-mile scenic route, all to raise money for two fantastic charities!”

Simon Holdsworth, Managing Partner of main event sponsors Thrings and a member of the firm’s walking team, added: “The Men’s Walk raises funds for two fantastic charities which change the lives of so many people in our local community. While we are long-time supporters of both organisations, we are also pleased to have fielded our largest-ever team of walkers, all of whom thoroughly enjoyed hiking through the beautiful countryside, the camaraderie of their fellow walkers and a richly deserved pie and a pint at the Rec.”
