Press Notes: Ulster Rugby

14 January 2020

Press notes with Director of Rugby Stuart Hooper following Tuesday's media conference ahead of the Round 6 clash with Ulster Rugby in the Heineken Champions Cup.

On Ulster Rugby trip

“It is a big game for us and it's important. For the evolution of the group it is important. For our supporters we want to go out there and put in a performance that allows us to win. We got within one point of them here and all but for the hand of Jacob Stockdale at the end, we might have snuck in for the result. It wasn’t to be and ultimately, we haven’t got the result that we wanted in the competition, so we have one last chance to go to Northern Ireland and get that this weekend.

“They need to win to go through. We want to be tested against the best and Ulster Rugby are in a position where they really want to do well and get the points and progress through the competition, so we will be doing everything that we can to stop that from happening.

“It is a huge game and we are treating it in that regard. We are going there with a team that we believe can win the game. When we finish that game, we will start preparing for Leicester Tigers.”

On Max Green Injury

“It was tough for Max. He broke his leg during the game and got up and carried on. It was quite remarkable courage from the young man. He was gutted after the game and then when it got confirmed on the x-ray, he was really disappointed.

"He has worked incredibly hard to get himself back in contention to be picked. I thought he started the game really well, but he understands that it is professional rugby and sometimes that happens, you come back from an injury and you pick up another one to a purely unlucky contact injury. It is just one of those situations that happen in a game.

"Max is getting that sorted straight away and we will get him back when he is ready. He is somebody that the entire squad feel for, they have seen the amount of effort that he put in to get back from the previous injury and it’s tough to take but, he’ll bounce back and he knows where he is headed.”

On transfer speculation

“There are always reports at this time of the year with various people coming and going. The one thing that we are very clear on as a Club is that we don’t discuss anyone’s contractual situation. When we do have news, we will definitely share that with the supporters. All these things are speculation and as and when they do happen it will be something that we will deal with in the right way.”
