Bath Rugby is pleased to confirm that the necessary work to renovate the playing surface and replace and enhance drainage systems at the Rec is complete.
This vital work provides the Club with more control over the technical elements that bind the playing surface together, consequently delivering a faster, flatter pitch for free-flowing attacking rugby and a more resilient surface which performs better in the scrum, ruck and maul.
The original drainage system, which had degraded sooner than anticipated, has been replaced and enhanced to provide the pitch standards required for the top-flight competitions.
The pitch upgrade, delivered by Ecosol, involved laying a substantial volume of additional primary drainage approximately half a metre under the playing surface, with a particular focus on the in-goal areas.
A system of secondary drainage has also been installed to build a grid of permeability for a fast and effective route for rainfall to disperse away from the playing surface.
The secondary system, which acts like a filter, runs along the length of the pitch at one meter widths and consists of sand on the surface and gravel more deeply.
The vital work was due to take place this summer, however, with the postponement of the 2019/20 season it was critical that the renovation was completed during the recent period of inactivity.
