The award-winning Vitality Bath Half Marathon took place on Sunday 13th March. 30,000 people descended on Bath to watch 15,000 runners, elite and amateur, pushing themselves to the limit.
Runners were treated to a few surprises on the route from Bath Rugby players, with Stuart Hooper at the start line launching the Fun Run, and Matt Banahan on the Lower Bristol road at Bath Rugby Foundation’s cheering bus.
Foundation runners arrived at the Clubhouse before the race for complimentary massage from Mendip Massage, University of Bath Massage and Team Breakthrough Massage. After that they headed to the pitch for a group photo with Bath Rugby captain Stuart Hooper before heading to the start line and running the race!
Perhaps their most notable runner came in the form of Sid Keyte, who decided to run the race dressed as a Bath Rugby ball. Thanks to sponsorship from Dyson, the ball became a reality, and Sid completed the race in an impressive 2:52:55. Bath MP, Ben Howlett, also ran the race in aid of the Foundation in an impressive 2:02:34 – before shooting off to Bristol airport to head straight for New York.
The runners also came from our own ranks, with Foundation Coach Rob Pickup running the course. Two participants from the HITZ programme were so inspired by what they saw whilst volunteering at previous events that they decided to take on the run themselves. Josh and Ben both completed the race, and thoroughly enjoyed it!
The Foundation was also the chosen charity for this year’s Family Fun Run. Started by its very own David Trick, and Stuart Hooper, the Fun Run covered a distance of just under a mile and was aimed at runners of all ages and abilities. Stuart’s wife Kate and three of his children took on the course, all finishing quickly. But the fastest runner was Max Davis, coming in at an impressive 0:04:36.
After both races, participants were invited back to the Clubhouse for another much needed massage, food and drinks.
The Foundation would like to thank its many runners, volunteers and supporters for making the day a great success. Thanks also to Bath Rugby Club, to Stuart Hooper, Jonathan Evans, Matt Banahan and, of course, Maximus!
Thanks to the many local businesses who provided their time or their products to make our runners more comfortable, Over the Moon balloons, Talking Pictures, Bath Uni Massage, Mendip Massage, Team Breakthrough massage, Scheckters Organics, Wessex Water, Fyffes bananas, Bristol Fruit Sales, Sainsburys Odd Down, David Wyatt, and Lindt & Sprungli.
