New Recruits Join Award Winning Hitz Project

3 October 2012

To mark the start of a 23-week employability training programme run by Hitz Bath, Ryan Caldwell of Bath Rugby and the Mayor of Bath gave two local young people their contracts in front of the crowd on the pitch at half time.

Hitz Bath, supported by Barclays Spaces for Sports, is a partnership between Premiership Rugby, Wooden Spoon and YMCA Training. Delivered by the Bath Rugby Foundation and YMCA Training, it offers 16 to 18 year olds the opportunity to gain a Foundation Learning qualification, improve functional skills including numeracy, literacy and ICT and combines classroom activity with practical rugby sessions.

Over the next three years, over 120 participants will receive work-based skills training, guidance on CV writing and interview techniques, and will have the opportunity to be placed on a wide range of apprenticeships supported by local businesses. The programme is funded by organistions including Barclays, SEGRO and The Tanner Trust as well as Sport England.

Hitz was awarded the Sport Industry Award for the Best Community Project 2012 and has recently expanded to the Bath area, based at The Rec.

Ryan Caldwell from Bath Rugby, said: "I'm really excited about Bath Rugby being involved in Premiership Rugby's Hitz programme and the opportunities that it will provide for young people in the Bath area.  Hitz will further the Club's role in becoming a hub for young people, enabling them to access education, volunteering and apprenticeship opportunities. "

David Wheldon, Head of Brand, Reputation and Citizenship, Barclays, said: "Our community investment programmes, such as Barclays Spaces for Sports, help young people develop some important skills to improve their chances in life. The Hitz programme will give these young people a real opportunity to develop the employability, financial and life skills that we hope will help them secure a job."

Bath Rugby are still recruiting for this project if you are a young person who is unsure of your next steps after leaving school or a local business that wants to become involved please contact the Hitz Officer at Bath: Stephen Barber on  07946 495 259 or
