Zach Mercer is looking for Bath Rugby to bounce back tomorrow night, as the Blue, Black and White host Saracens at the Rec (kick-off 19:45).
Bath came within a minute of securing a victory against third placed Harlequins, and the back rower is aiming for a positive reaction with the champions coming to town.
“The two results (Northampton Saints and Harlequins), we’ve been in the game. We started poorly against Quins – everyone can look at the end, but you’ve got to look at the first 15 minutes when we conceded two tries. We showed resilience to come back into it, but it wasn’t enough in the end.
“It’s going to be a really hard-fought battle in defence and attack tomorrow night, but we’re looking forward to it as a team because we want to right some wrongs from last weekend.”
Both teams will go into the game missing players on Six Nations duty, but the 21 year-old is well aware of the depth that Saracens have in their squad especially after last weekend’s emphatic 36-17 win over play-off hopefuls Northampton Saints at Allianz Park.”
“They’ve (Saracens) lost some players and we’ve lost two (Charlie Ewels and Joe Cokanasiga), but it gives an opportunity for other players to step up. I’ve played against a couple of their young lads before and they’ve all got potential, so it’s going to be a really exciting battle tomorrow night under the lights.”
From a personal point of view, Mercer is thoroughly enjoying his rugby and is looking to use this week’s game to repay the supporters’ unwavering loyalty.
“It’s been good to get some game time under my belt – I’m committed to being here and playing with a special group of players, which gets the best out of me. Hopefully I can just pick it up again this weekend.
“We could feel the frustration on the weekend and like I said, we want to right some wrongs. The reason we come out on the pitch is for the supporters and we want to make them proud of us.”
