Junior Match Report: Bath Rugby 22-19 Worcester Warriors

9 January 2022

Bath Rugby recorded their first win of the 2021/22 season against Worcester Warriors on Sunday.

It wasn’t the prettiest of matches, but a whole lot of heart and effort went into securing the result with Orlando Bailey kicking a 69th-minute penalty in a second half which saw the Blue, Black and Whites shutout the visitors at the Rec.

A minute into the game, Rory Sutherland – Worcester’s Scotland and British & Irish Lions prop – received a red card for head-on-head collision with Bath’s England international Will Stuart.

Moments later, a superb passage of play resulted in Semesa Rokoduguni scoring. Full debutant Tom Doughty, Ollie Fox and Jonathan Joseph combined to get Bath into the Warriors’ 22 and a sweeping sequence of handling ended with Rokoduguni coming in off his wing to finish.

Worcester full-back Jamie Shillcock replied with a try from a diagonal run but it didn’t take long for Bath to retake the lead. Jonathan Joseph’s deft dink was chased on to by his centre partner Max Ojomoh who somehow grasped the ball an inch from the surface and placed the ball on the try line.

But Warriors weren’t downhearted by the 14-5 scoreline and headed into half-time with a 19-14 lead. Joe Batley and Gareth Simpson both crossed for tries prior to the break.

In the second half, Bath kept Worcester out for the entire 40 minutes and secured victory by a moment of brilliance from Tom de Glanville and Bailey’s boot.

De Glanville started a move from deep, combining with Rokoduguni, and he received possession back from his wing to dive over and level the game at 19-19.

Bath remained patient, worked hard as a unit and eventually got their rewards with Bailey striking from the tee approximately 45 metres out.

With a three-point lead, Stuart Hooper’s side needed to be resilient in the final stages and terrific defence, led by Max Clark and Jonathan Joseph, sealed an important home win.
