Tom Carr-Smith was on the scoresheet for England Under-20s as they overcame 41-24 Scotland Under-20s in their U20 Six Nations opener.
The scrum-half started the match in Edinburgh with Bath Rugby Academy teammate John Stewart taking the number two jersey. The latter was replaced by fellow Blue, Black and White hooker Jasper Spandler for his competitive Under-20s debut.
England were behind at the DAM Health Stadium before Carr-Smith’s try turned the screw. The 19-year-old held a superb running line, ahead of the play and stepped on the gas at the right moment to take a final which saw him scamper in.
The trio and Ewan Richards – who missed the game due to a dead leg – face Italy on the road in Round 2.
Meanwhile, Thompson Cowan and Wales Under-20s were on the end of a heavy defeat to Ireland.
Despite the result, it was a proud day for Cowan who, like Spandler, earned his first honours for his country at Under-20 level, coming on after 22 minutes and the again in the 49th minute.
At senior level, Charlie Ewels and Will Stuart earned further international recognition with England but couldn’t help Eddie Jones’ side regain the Calcutta Cup.
