International round-up

19 August 2019

Bath Rugby saw seven players represent England on the international stage at the weekend with England facing Wales at the Principality Stadium and England U18s finalising their international series tour against South Africa Schools. Here's a recap of how they got on.

Wales 13-6 England

Bath Rugby's Anthony Watson, Joe Cokanasiga and Jonathan Joseph all featured as Wales rose to the top of the world rankings for the first time after grinding out a 13-6 victory over England in the World Cup warm-up at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff.

George North's scored the only try of the game after inspiring play from fly-half Dan Biggar, which helped Wales build a 10-0 lead at the end of a closely contested but disjointed first-half in the capital.

England edged into the contest during the second period with two George Ford penalties as defences dominated, but Leigh Halfpenny struck the decisive penalty on his return to the Wales side to earn a monumental win.

Orlando Bailey, Ewan Richards, Ethan Staddon and John Stewart all impressed in England U18s narrow 33-27 loss to South Africa Schools in their final fixture of the U18 International Series.

Jim Mallinder’s side led 19-13 at the break, scoring tries through Emeka Ilione and Orlando Bailey as well as a penalty try, while South Africa crossed through Andre-Hugo Venter and Jan-Hendrik Wessels.

Matthew Ward crossed for England but three second-half scores for South Africa sealed victory in Wellington.
