Full back Simon Danielli quickly settled any nerves in his new found role with a chip and chase try after just five minutes as the visitors made an excellent start, but Colomiers came back strongly with a try from centre Jean Phillipe Viard in the thirteenth minute to tie the scores. A converted try from winger Aires pulled the hosts into a seven point lead before Captain Dubois added a penalty in the 24th minute to stretch the score to 15-5.
Bath Rugby never gave up though and continued to pressure the Colomiers defence, particularly in the forwards before Martyn Wood atoned for his mistake at Rortherham last weekend to charge down an attempted Colomiers clearance. Ross Blake, playing on the wing, gathered and fed to Alex Crockett who gave the scoring pass to Wood. Olly Barkley, who had missed his first tweo kicks at goal in difficult conditions, made sure with the touchline conversion.
Entering the final five minutes of the first half, Bath Rugby were back within three. However, Dubois added a second penalty to give the hosts a 18-12 half time advantage.
It was a completely different Bath Rugby side that took to the field in the second half. First half errors gave way to some superb attacking rugby and Olly Barkley landed a penalty before Andrew Higgins scored the first of his two tries, which Barkley converted before adding a second penalty.
Andrew Higgins crossed for his second late on in the half, but Colomiers restored some hope for the trip to the Rec on Saturday with a late converted try.
There are still tickets available for the second leg at the Rec on Saturday (2.15pm). Mike Catt and Mike Tindall will be parading the William Webb Ellis trophy at half time. To buy tickets please call the Bath Rugby Ticket Office on 01225 460 588.
