Government guidance issued to assist elite sport to return to training

13 May 2020

The Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) published guidance this afternoon to assist a variety of organisations within elite sport, including Premiership Rugby, to deliver a safe and appropriate return to organised training for its athletes and staff.

The document provides a framework for elite sport organisations with recommended minimum practice measures to guide the first stage of the return to training, which relates only to the restarting of individual training with strict social distancing.

The guidance will now need to be interpreted by the RFU and Premiership Rugby who will further develop specific policies for Premiership Clubs to satisfy, before a return to individual socially distanced training.

Tarquin McDonald, Chief Executive commented;

"Work has been underway here at the Club for some time and continues to be developed in order to maximise our readiness to return to training as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.

"The next stage of this process is to work with Premiership Rugby, the RFU and other stakeholders to meet all requirements that are set for our sport, based on the government guidance.

"Discussions will follow with players and staff before any form of training will resume, with their welfare firmly sitting at the heart of our decision making process here at the Club.”
