Dempsey striving for consistency

13 August 2018

Bath Rugby Attack Coach Girvan Dempsey has set his sights on consistency this season, following his summer arrival from Leinster.

The 82-time capped Irish international helped guide the Irish outfit to PRO 14 and Champions Cup success last season, and is now looking for Bath to excel both domestically and in Europe.

On what he was looking to see from the squad, Dempsey said: “I think consistency, consistency of performances and consistency in getting results. Bath put in some really good performances but didn’t get the results, and our biggest challenge is to build that consistency throughout the season, get off to a good start and put ourselves in a position where we are in knock-out stages of two competitions come play-off time”.

During his time at Leinster, he was instrumental in changing the fortunes of the club, and hopes that this experience can help Bath realise their ambitions.

“We went through a tough time but we came out the other end of it and build a winning culture and a winning mentality and won silverware at the end of it,” he said. “That’s what I hope to do with this current group of players and coaches and we are very aligned and in a good place to do that.”

It’s been a whirlwind few months for Dempsey swapping Ireland for the West Country, but admits that he’s revelling in his new environment. “I’ve settled in brilliantly - everyone has been so welcoming and I’ve fitted in extremely well. Pre-season has gone excellently, we’ve put in a lot of hard work, the boys are working extremely hard and we are upbeat about the pre-season friendlies coming up”.

“I’ve been impressed across the board, some of the young guys have impressed, and really taken the opportunity. Some of the senior boys have shown some excellent leadership and helped them along, the boys have trained really well and their fitness scores have been off the charts”.

Dempsey will face his former side in the Heineken Champions Cup, and is already looking forward to locking horns with the Irish giants.

“I’m really excited, I can’t wait. The text banter has starting already with some of their coaches and players. It’s also an opportunity for us to test ourselves against one of, if not the best team in Europe, so it’s a game we’re all looking forward to”.
