Thompson to captain Bath Rugby Women's Sevens at first tournament of 2022

13 May 2022

Bath Rugby Women's Sevens are hoping for an exciting inaugural tournament of 2022 at Newbury Sevens.

The newly-assembled team – the first ever Bath Rugby Women’s side – are set to begin a summer of Sevens events in Berkshire on Saturday.

A 13-player squad has been named for the first leg of the Super Sevens Series, including England University National Sevens Squad player Thea Thompson (pictured) as tournament captain and Welsh sprinters Nia Grundy and Bethan Wakefield.

England Under-20 international Megan Barwick is also included, alongside fellow Bath Rugby Ladies players Robyn Price, Anya Small, Leah McGoldrick, Rebecca Wye and Rebecca Lacey.

North Dorset’s Sofia Mazzone, North Bristol’s Alicia Sutcliffe and Bethanie Wilson of North Petherton have all been selected too. University of Bath player Ella Porter comes in to cover injuries and is looking to add her XVs and Touch skill set to the squad.

With a potential of six games to be played, Bath Rugby Women and Girls Rugby Development Lead, Maria Crowfoot, recognises the challenge the players face but is confident that they can deliver a good set of performances against a string of strong teams.

“To be recognised as one of the tournament’s core teams is a great achievement given that this is our first ever women’s sevens group,” she said.

“The players have worked incredibly hard over the last five weeks and there is definitely a buzz of excitement ahead of Saturday where we are looking forward to testing ourselves against established and new oppositions.

“This is a historic moment for the club, this group and the players, and it’s something we’re relishing. We’re hoping this added motivation will spark our performances in this leg."

The team is adept in speed, alongside experience in the XVs game, and are hoping to exhibit their abilities in the Sevens space.

Newbury are hosting some well-established, strong sides with the Blue, Black and White grouped in Pool A against Army Reds, Samurai RFC, Lionesses and Scimitar Storm.

Bath Rugby Women’s Sevens have prepared for the upcoming Sevens tournaments with specialist help from the Southern Academy of Sport - specialists in athlete performance with a mission to help athletes of all levels fulfil their potential by optimising physical performance and rehabilitating injury.
