Bath Rugby Women head to South Island Sevens looking for more success

20 May 2022

After a successful first ever Sevens tournament for Bath Rugby Women, the team head to the Isle of Wight this weekend for the second leg of their elite tournament run.

Coached by Maria Crowfoot, who leads on Women and Girls’ Rugby Development, the recently formed group are hoping for another set of strong performances at South Island Sevens.

“Last week was such a positive start for us and we’re really hoping to build on the success of Newbury as we head to South Island Sevens,” she said.

“Some of the other squad members will be able to showcase their talents and bring their skills to the pitch.”

Captained by Rebecca Wye of Bath RFC Ladies, the Blue, Black and White will take on Jesters, Lionesses, the Navy and potentially a fourth side with over 2,000 spectators set to be in attendance. The weekend will have a tour-like feel to it with an opportunity to grow the cohesion of the squad.

Bath RFC Ladies player Hannah Meek comes into the side to add versatility in the midfield, along with National Sevens Academy fly-half Liv Taylor (pictured) and Dorset & Wiltshire’s Alicia Sutcliffe.

Wings Nia Grundy and Bethan Wakefield are hoping to bring more of their speed to the pitch, with last week’s player of the tournament Megan Barwick also named after her hearty and dedicated performance at Newbury.

Adaptable and experienced scrum-half Sofia Mazzone remains in the team, as does Somerset’s Bethanie Wilson and Bath RFC Ladies players Anya Small, Lead McGoldrick and Rebecca Lacey.

“There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the team and we’re stoked to see what the girls can do at South Island,” continued Crowfoot.

“Now that we’ve seen how we can work together during a game, we’re keen to capitalise on players’ strengths.”

This will be Bath’s second outing as a Sevens group having only been formed in the last couple of months.
