Bath Rugby Unseen | Episode 7: Pulling on the Bath Jersey

24 September 2021

We saw a lot of our new style on the opening day at Sale Sharks and we were also introduced to four new Bath Rugby players at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Danny Cipriani, Johannes Jonker, D'Arcy Rae and Jaco Coetzee all earned their debuts in Blue, Blackand White after a long pre-season learning the culture of the club, the way we want to play and getting to know their new teammates.

In episode 7 of Bath Rugby Unseen, powered by Dyson, we talked to the three forwards about their journey so far and what it meant to them to run out in the Bath jersey.

"When I was a school kid I watched the Premiership and it’s just amazing the way the boys play here; it’s physical rugby, it’s good rugby," Jonker said.

"I never ever thought I would come overseas and never even thought of playing for Bath so it’s just a massive honour and privilege to be here."

Rae added: "It’s always an amazing feeling to put on the jersey especially after hearing about the jersey being 150 years old and the history of the place and where we train.

"I’ve noticed when walking around the city – me, my missus and the dog – people do wear Bath kit! It’s pretty cool you walk about and see old tops or the old boy wearing the tie or something or a hat. It’s just cool to see that and then hearing about the buzz it just makes it even more special."

Coetzee has been at Bath Rugby a few months longer than Jonker and Rae and has already witnessed a home crowd at the Rec, albeit a reduced one.

The South African is extremely excited to have the opportunity to represent the club in front of the 'passionate' Bath supporters.

"The last game (of last season) when we played Northampton I think there were only 3,000 people and it felt like the stadium was full!

"I hope I have the opportunity to play this weekend in a full stadium especially at the Rec because I’ve just heard from everyone here about the atmosphere at the Rec and how amazing it is to have everyone there. It gives me a bit more motivation to work a bit harder to stay in the 23.

"I really hope I’m able to play this weekend as I really want to experience it as a player to see the fans and hear the fans as I’ve heard the Bath supporters are really passionate so I’m excited to see how it is here."
