Bath Rugby Unseen | Episode 4: The set-piece contribution to our style

7 September 2021

In the previous three episodes of Bath Rugby Unseen, we have referred to a style we want to play in the 2021/22 season with our defensive efforts forcing turnovers to transition into attack.

In Episode 4, we look at how line-outs and scrums will also present an opportunity for us to revert to our style on the field.

Lock Charlie Ewels said: “By definition, the set piece is how the game is restarted so something has happened before so it’s an opportunity for us to again then to impose our style on the opposition.

“It’s a big part of our job (as forwards); it’s a big part of the momentum in the game as well. Obviously, you want to get the ball, you want to attack, you want to play with the ball; if it’s your set piece, if you don’t get your stuff right from the start and you don’t get the set piece right you can’t do that, it falls at the first hurdle.

“On the flipside of that, the opposition are trying to do the same thing. They want to get the ball out, they want to play and put pressure back on you so again if you can disrupt that at stage one and step one either by stealing the ball, the way that we scrummage, whatever that might be… it can give you massive momentum swings within the game.”

So many intricacies go into both components of the game and coaches Luke Charteris and Mark Lilley are keen to use their particular area to boost the club’s attacking style.

“Teams are starting to get a lot more creative in terms of what you can do from the line-out,” line-out coach Charteris said.

“It’s not just the trick plays around the five-metre line now; it’s starting to be used as a weapon throughout the pitch. It’s a good platform where you can control a bit more around how we launch, especially with the back five we’ve got. We want to launch those boys the best we can and put us in a great position.”

Scrum coach Lilley added: “It’s that bigger picture understanding of the game we want to play. We can’t just isolate our scrum away from our game.

“It’s about us understanding our style and making sure everyone understands that bigger picture philosophy and how that connects to our scrum.”
