Bath Rugby Foundation launch 'Get Active into Work' programme

6 May 2014

Following the successes of Russell Vincent, Becks Toan and Terry Clifford who have all gained employment after attending 'Get Active into Work', the Bath Rugby Foundation are pleased to confirm that the new term starts on May 8th.

Get Active into Work, a partnership between BaNES Council and Bath Rugby Foundation, is a twelve week programme teaching people not in employment, training or education (NEETS) aged 16 + the Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA).

The course is tutored by Foundation Inclusion Manager Caryl Thomas and volunteer coaches from Bath Rugby Foundation. It involves two days a week of training and mentoring for 8 weeks, followed by a work placement with either the Council or partner organisation.

The programme includes a Level 2 in Community Sport Leadership award as well as money management, project planning and a first aid course. Suitable candidates will be supported to go on to take their Level 2 coaching qualifications.

Caryl Thomas explains that "Ultimately the course is about three main things – progression into jobs, education and training; qualifications, and improved health and wellbeing. We want to help these people and increase their opportunities for development, giving them confidence in themselves."

Former participant and success story Terry Clifford, employed by Bath Rugby in January 2013 explains how GAIW has helped him "Since starting the course I feel a lot more confident & a lot happier than I've been in a long time and my daughter's also happier, which is great. I used to just look for work and not get anywhere. In doing the course I enjoyed being around people and getting out the house and it's just built my confidence. I've now been employed for over a year where I initially started as a volunteer gaining experience."

Becks Toan says that the GAIW programme gave her "a boost in confidence as I had been out of work for a length of time, it also enabled me to gain access to more qualifications and training. In addition, it made me realise which career path I wanted for myself"
