Bath Rugby Foundation and Hidden Woods create a day of celebration for Breakthrough youngsters

9 June 2014

Bath Rugby Foundation celebrated the end of term on June 3rd by taking a group of children from local schools in Bath to Hidden Woods in Farleigh Hungerford for a day of woodland fun.

The children, all part of the Foundation's Breakthrough project, experienced a day of bushcraft and woodland activities including shelter building and sing-alongs at Beech Camp, one of Hidden Woods four purpose-built camps within Farleigh Wood. Additionally, children and staff worked together on challenges such as building a rope swing and taking on an obstacle course, reinforcing key messages learnt throughout the school term and ensuring a fun filled day was enjoyed by all.

The Breakthrough programme, run by Bath Rugby Foundation Inclusion Manager Caryl Thomas and a group of Foundation Coaches, creates positive experiences and relationships with young people in order to help them achieve, grow, develop skills and realize their full potential. In partnership with BaNES Sport & Active Lifestyles, Breakthrough is a mentoring scheme using skilled mentors to offer weekly, one-to-one support to a range of young people identified by agencies as being in need of support. The project uses activities to help our mentees build positive relationships with adults and peers as well as interests and skills that can be sustained in the longer term.

Inclusion Manager Caryl Thomas explained the importance of the day: "The Annual Breakthrough Woodland Celebration day is a great opportunity for children to experience the outdoors and learn to play and explore. Breakthrough's one on one mentoring aims to build confidence and a skill set that is transferable to all aspects of life. The Woodland day reinforces these skills, allowing the children to try something new in a safe environment with people they trust."

Steve Sutherland from Hidden Woods added: "Outdoor play and adventure is an essential part of young people's development, so we're very proud of the opportunities we create for people to reconnect with nature in a fun and engaging way. We're delighted to be working with Bath Rugby Foundation and supporting the fantastic work that they do within the local community. We very much hope that we will continue to work together with future groups in the woods."
