Bath Rugby Charity Open raises £4000 for Bath Rugby Foundation

10 June 2013

The Bath Rugby Charity Open, supported by the Club's main partner Novia Financial, was held recently at the Celtic Manor 2010 Ryder Cup Course and raised a fantastic £4000 for the Bath Rugby Foundation.

22 teams from companies who support the Club took part, with "expert" advice coming on the day from the likes of current player Matt Banahan and past legends Duncan Bell, Phil de Glanville, John Hall and David Trick.

Auction lots were held at the pre-event dinner to raise money for the Foundation, and included a day with "Captain" Lee Mears who will fly a guest from Bristol Airport to Cornwall for a round of golf, a matchday experience with the Bath Rugby Legends, a family matchday experience including the chance for the winner's child to be the matchday mascot, and an away trip to one of the Amlin Challenge Cup games.

Travers Smith walked away with the coveted Bath Rugby Charity Open Trophy, as well as a Joules Gillet and bottle of Champagne each, with Withy King and the Novia Tour Pro's a close second and third respectively.

The teams arrived the night before, each receiving a Joules Polo shirt and a selection of RockFace products.

They were also treated to an enlightening question and answer session, hosted by Jonny Gould, with Matt Banahan and David Trick. Not only did Matt reveal his pre-match superstitions and routines, but they also compared the modern preparation for a game with that of days gone by – when Matt could get a word in edgeways!

The golfers were out practicing on the superb facilities at the Twenty Ten course from 8.00 the next day, before heading onto the course for the Shotgun start. Hand-held mobile devices provided by Celtic Manor meant all the golfers could keep up with who was currently top of the leaderboard, and who was somewhere closer to the bottom!

Bill Vasilieff, CEO at Novia said: "The Bath Rugby Charity Open is very popular amongst local business and we were delighted that this event raised over £4000 for the Foundation. Everybody who took part had a fantastic time and it was great to see such good, friendly competition between the local teams."

A huge "thank you" to Celtic Manor for the use of their wonderful facilities and course, to Novia for all their support with the event, and to all the golfers who took part.

A great time was had by all and many are already looking forward to returning next year. If anyone else would like to enter a team for the 2014 event, please register your interest with
