Bath Players at Blandford RFC

26 September 2012

Last Sunday Jack Cuthbert and Guy Mercer from Bath Rugby's first team squad together with university scholar, Tom Vaughan Edwards took part in a "Welcome to Blandford Rugby Club Day".

The Dorset club invited pupils from all the schools in their catchment area to participate in a morning's training, together with the enticement of free 'bacon rolls!'
To say the weather wasn't kind is an understatement; for the entire morning it varied from rain, to heavy rain to the occasional torrential downpour. However, it did little to dampen the spirits of around eighty youngsters who braved the conditions and took part in the various age group sessions.

Paul Speakman, Blandford RFC Schools Liaison Officer was not only delighted with the appearance of the three Bath players but also how they all involved themselves in the various training sessions.

"I've spoken to numerous parents and there was unanimity amongst them, we had a really good rugby day on what was definitely not a good weather day - we saw some brave kids out there!" he said. "The excitement, motivation and inspiration provided by the appearance and participation of Jack, Guy & Tom was great to see.

Bath President, David Trick was also in attendance but seemed to spend more time under the Gazebo keeping an eye on the bacon rolls with a coffee in hand.

"I could see the Bath guys had everything under control on the pitch and felt my time would be better spent chatting to the parents in the dry," he said in his defence. "On a serious note, I would like to thank all three of them for travelling to Blandford on a miserable Sunday morning and making the occasion a memorable one for all the aspiring rugby players who participated.
