Bath Foundation take part in Playground to Podium

30 November 2011

The Playground to Podium event went really well last Friday.  Caryl Thomas, Bath Rugby's Foundation Inclusion Manager, who was involved with the event which took place  at  Bath University, enjoyed teaching over 60 young people to throw, pass and play a popular game called 'Stuck in the Mud!'    All the young people present had either hearing, visual or physical disabilties and they had a great time taking part in a variety of activities including  fencing, tennis, judo, and athletics.

The children had been specially selected from both mainstream and special schools for their potential to be good at sport.  James Cainey, School Sport Co-ordinator at Fosseway School, Radstock said: "It is a fantastic opportunity for these young people to show what they can do away from mainstream PE lessions.  It gives them a chance to shine."

The children who did really well will be fast tracked onto National Governing Bodies who will see if any of them can fit into the paralympian pathway to specific sports.  Others who were introduced to a sport  in which they showed potential and liked, were signposted to a local club in their area so that they could  continue to develop their new skills.
