Despite a courageous late comeback, Bath Rugby Academy narrowly fell to a 24-23 defeat to Saracens Academy at Allianz Park on Friday.
Wil Partington got the scoreboard ticking over with an early penalty, but the home side hit back with a try from Elliott Obatoyinbo after 10 minutes. 7-3
Five minutes later, Partington was back in the spotlight with a fantastic individual effort, which saw the fullback run from inside his own half, to put Bath back into the lead. 7-8
Josh Hallett was next to get his name on the scoresheet with the Saracens centre crossing the whitewash, but Bath were quick to respond through Luke Mehson. Play went through a number of well-worked phases, with the winger taking the Blue, Black and White within a point of the hosts after 25 minutes. 14-13
Saracens’ hooker Billy Young ensured that his side would go into the half-time break with a six-point advantage scoring their third try of the evening.
Half-time score – Saracens Academy 19-13 Bath Rugby Academy
The second half started the way the first half finished with Saracens scoring, this time through flanker Oscar Furneaux. 24-13
The tide then began to turn in favour of Bath, with three Saracens players sent to the sin bin within eight minutes of each other. Saracens were made to pay with Partington taking advantage of some sustained pressure to score his second try of the game and take his side within six points after 50 minutes. 24-18
Some aggressive Bath defence then forced Saracens into an error, with Mehson taking advantage to join Partington on two tries. After making an interception, Mehson used the kick and chase to good effect to score and put his side within touching distance. However, it was heartache for Bath, with Partington’s resulting conversion hit the post, which then saw Saracens close out the remaining 10 minutes of the game.
