The Barbarians have selected an adventurous squad to face the combined might of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force rugby teams at Bath Rugby’s Recreation Ground on Tuesday 11th November.
Coached by former Wales and Lion international Phil Davies, the Barbarians have enjoyed two thrilling matches against the Wallabies and Leicester Tigers over the past two weeks.
Their famous brand of devil-may-care rugby will be very much to the fore at the Rec on Tuesday, with no fewer than six international sevens players in the squad. England's Sean Marsden and Josh Drauniniu – himself a former Navy man – are joined by Wales 7s stars Luke Treharne, Gareth Davies, Nicky Thomas and Jon Edwards.
Rising Bath University star Nick Gale is included amongst a host of talent from across the domestic leagues. In addition to Cardiff Blues’ Gareth Davies, Worcester Warrior Drauniniu is joined by teammate (and ex-Bath Rugby player) Mat Gilbert, Sale Sharks' Charlie Walker Blair is named in the squad, as is Newcastle Falcon Matt Thompson, and Gavin Cattle of Cornish Pirates.
The formidable and exciting line-up for the Barbarians is completed by a powerful blend of youth and experience. Young prospects from North Wales development side RGC 1404 Andy Baston and Bryn Williams are joined by highly experienced players such as former Aviva Premiership and Army star Chris Budgen, along with James Goode (Ospreys and Cardiff Blues).
Combined Services Captain Dave Pascoe said: “This year, as every year, the Barbarians have a fantastic side. They always play fast attacking rugby, play hard, respect their opponents and are as magnanimous in victory as they are dignified in defeat – everything I love about rugby. I can't wait to get out on the pitch.”
This year will be the first year that the Barbarians also sport the poppy emblem on their shirts, in commemoration of the outbreak of the Great War 100 years ago in 1914.
