In association with Academy Partner, BMT, each month will see one of the emerging young stars in the Academy ranks named as the BMT Academy Player of the Month. September’s winner is Zach Mercer.
Academy Manager, Andy Rock, explains why the young back row has been nominated.
“There are a few reasons why we’ve chosen Zach as the winner this month.
“Firstly, he has made a positive impact in the first team by producing some solid performances, and executing some of his basics really well. One example of Zach’s positive approach was shown when playing against Newcastle – not only did he perform well in his first team debut, but he ended the game on the wing, and he just got on with the job in hand without any fuss.
“He’s dealt with stepping up brilliantly by just focusing on his role each week and working with the senior coaches to understand how best he can contribute to the team's performance.
“It’s also important to recognise that Zach has been one of a few players who have developed a good connection with the younger academy players (15-16 year olds) by coming to coaching sessions on Thursdays and developing their skills. This is so important to the long-term aims of the Academy and the Club, and his willingness to offer his time has been first class.
“The experiences that Zach has been given so far have been great, and will hopefully be the start of his journey towards a long career at Bath Rugby.”
BMT is proud to maintain its relationship with Bath Rugby and, this season, to be named its Academy Partner. Developing talent is critical to our continued success as a business - a value we clearly share with Bath Rugby. Seeing Bath’s home grown talent play a key part in the successful start to this season demonstrates why this matters. We’re looking forward to an exciting season ahead on the field and to watching the Academy players progress to sporting excellence.
