Academy Debate with Royal High School

15 November 2012

Recently Bath Rugby Academy players Richard Lane, JJ Kilmartin and Joe Buckle took part in a debate with the Sixth Form girls at the Royal High School in Bath.

“This is my worst nightmare!” said JJ as we walked into the Hudson Centre.  Debating in front of over 20 young ladies about an unknown subject was very intimidating for the boys.  On previous visits they have played netball with the girls, which they took to quite naturally, whereas this was out of the sports arena.

But, with the support of the girls and Deputy Head of College and English teacher, Nick Evans, the boys did Bath Rugby proud, as well as gaining confidence in speaking in public and being put out of their comfort zone.  Two motions were put forward:

JJ Kilmartin and Gaby Jenner spoke very convincingly for: ‘This House believes that the under representation of women’s sport in print and broadcast media, means that the Olympic legacy can never be fulfilled’ with Joe Buckle and Abi Polding opposing.

Richard Lane, teamed with Darcy Evans, then proposed: ‘This House believes the Olympic legacy will be lasting and beneficial.’

Supper was served for everyone in between the debates, which was an enjoyable opportunity to relax and establish new friendships.

At the end of the evening Sixth Former Gaby Jenner said: “It’s been great.  I think they were really good.  Although they were quite nervous at the start, they definitely made the debate a lot more entertaining and they brought a lot of enthusiasm to it, which was really infectious.”

In the past Bath Rugby have enjoyed working with Rebecca Dougall, the Head of the Royal High School on a number of ventures.  These have included a fantastic fashion show, public speaking and netball challenges.

Joe Buckle, who was announced to be the Academy’s most eloquent speaker commented: “It’s been tremendous fun.  We were not sure what to expect, but the girls were great and helped us through what could have been a terrible ordeal! We can’t wait for the netball though – more our scene!”
