Over 60,000 supporters descended on the home of England Rugby for the much-anticipated clash between Bath Rugby and Bristol Bears. However, it was stars from the South West, who provided the pre-match entertainment.

The day kicked off at 10am, with over 400 children from Oldfield RFC, Chippenham RFC, Old Redcliffians RFC, Canterbury RFC and Bath Minis RFC following in the footsteps of their rugby heroes at Twickenham.

There was more to follow, with 150 children taking part in a never seen before pre-match spectacle ahead of kick-off. Players from Gordano RFC and Midsomer Norton RFC were selected to take part in the Guard of Honour, cheering Bath Rugby and Bristol Bears on to the field.

It was also a special day for 15 budding players from the Bath catchment, who were selected to be the official Bath mascots for the day. A tour around the changing rooms and prime positions for the warm-up greeted the group before they had their moment running out with the Blue, Black and White to the roars of the 60,000 crowd.

At half-time, Bath Rugby’s Community team teamed up with the Bath Rugby Foundation to showcase female rugby. The crowd were treated to a taste of one of the fastest growing sports in the country as youngsters from St Gregory’s and Royal High School in Bath and Clarendon in Trowbridge took to the field.

The rate of change in women’s sports is one of the most exciting trends in the sports industry, with participation rates in rugby growing each year. Bath Rugby deliver coaching sessions to girls across a number of different programmes within Primary and Secondary Schools around the local catchment area. It’s clear to see the growth in participation and enjoyment across all ages, as previous barriers have now been removed.

This academic year, Royal High School have begun working with Bath Rugby coaches during their curriculum Physical Education lessons. The girls have all demonstrated Rugby’s core values (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship) and are being awarded for their fantastic work and willingness to learn.
