Heart Research UK supports new, innovative projects that promote heart health and prevent or reduce the risk of heart disease in specific groups or communities.

Through ‘Heart of a Lion’, which targets schoolchildren in years 7 and 8, the Foundation proposes to host several different activities promoting heart health, including:

a one-day intensive course at the Recreation Ground, covering topics such as stress, diabetes, blood pressure, diet, exercise, alcohol and smoking.
education sessions held at mainstream and special needs schools, withinteractive sessions highlighting the difference between a healthy heart and a damaged one.
a fitness session incorporating heart rate monitors and glow motion bands to allow children to understand how activity affects heart health.

The Foundation’s specialist coaches aim to deliver the programme, with Bath Rugby players visiting some sessions – along with Maximus, the Club mascot after whom the project is named – in order to reinforce the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The information gathered from these sessions will allow the Foundation coaches to track and follow up on participants’ progress, meaning a longer term investment in their wellbeing.
