Garvey was well aware of what was at stake going into the game, and admits that the strong start was crucial to delivering the bonus-point victory in front of a capacity crowd at the Rec.

“We spoke beforehand about what we had to play for. The start was always going to be key and those early tries put us on the front foot and we didn’t let our standards slip.

“To see us play like how we wanted to all year was a little frustrating, but we are over the moon that the team will be playing Champions Cup rugby next season.”

The 30-year-old emphasised the importance of securing top European rugby, and believes that Bath has a squad capable of mounting a serious challenge.

“It’s important for a number of reasons. For the players it’s exciting - we’ve always said that once we have everyone fit and healthy we’ve got one of the best squads in Europe, and one that can compete in the latter stages of the competition.

“But it’s also huge for both the Club and the supporters. They’ll get to see the best competition and the best teams Europe has to offer playing at the Rec.”

Whilst admitting the performances haven’t been consistent enough across the board, Garvey was pleased to give something back to the supporters who have backed the team throughout the campaign.

“It’s been hard for them and hard for us. We’ve wanted to get results like we did on Saturday on a more regular basis this season, but for whatever reason we haven’t been able to do that.

“There have been a number of highs and some lows over the last few months, but it’s always humbling when the supporters continue to travel up and down the country to cheer on the team, and that’s been rewarded with Champions Cup rugby next year.”
