Twenty-one years ago, a 37-acre patch of farmland above Twerton became Bath City Farm, saved by the passion of local people and supporters across the city.

The largest city farm in the south west of England, the farm has grown up around connecting people with food and farming, and helping to transform people’s lives. A key part of farm life is the animals. Like in any working farm, they’re very popular with visitors of all ages and go to the heart of what farming is all about. From a pair of Shetland ponies to hens rescued from battery farms, staff and volunteers take great pride in the animals that call Bath City Farm home. To help with covering the costs of looking after the animals, Bath City Farm have set up a scheme where people can help make a difference to life on the farm.

“Adopt an Animal” is all about supporting the ducks, pigs, geese and goats at the farm. The annual adoption fee goes straight to the animals, helping to pay for their food, contributing towards veterinary bills, and allowing the charity to maintain fencing and the shelters. The “Feathered Friends” project shows the real benefits of the initiative. People from across Bath come to the farm to help look after them and spend time stroking the hens. Known as ‘animal therapy’, the programme is helping to make a real difference to the lives of people who feel isolated or live on their own, creating a sense of community.
