With only three Rounds left to play for of the regular season, Ewels insisted that the side must focus on themselves in order to keep climbing the league table.

He said: “We are looking to focus on ourselves and look at doing the things that we know we do well. Instead of looking at sides and saying this is where their weaknesses are, teams don’t generally have many weaknesses so it’s about looking at what our strengths are, how we can impose our game onto them and play how we want to play.

“It’s a big game on Sunday, not only from a table point of view but the way that we’ve been and the stuff we have spoken about is being consistent with our preparation. The way that we review, the way that we prepare the way that we preview teams that we’re going to play but we look at ourselves a lot.

“We look at our own performance and the things that we value that are important to us. We keep it quite consistent in how we train and in turn that should hopefully keep our performances consistent.

“We have had another quick turnaround. We have to learn our lessons from the Worcester game and very quickly look ahead of us to Sale, so we’ve had a good couple of days training, and we’ll be ready for Sunday.”

The England international is wary of the side that Sale Sharks have at their disposal but admits it is no different to any of the other sides in the Gallagher Premiership.

He continued: “Sale have some word class individuals - they are a physical side. They have some big ball carriers all over their team but that’s no different to any other team in this league. physicality is always important to us.

“You’re never going to play a game and say that’s not something that we need and it’s not important to us so they are a quality side and they’ve shown that since lockdown with some of their results and performances. It will be a brilliant challenge for us.”

On reflecting upon Wednesday’s 40-15 victory over Worcester Warriors, Ewels sat out the match whilst being rested and watched the Round 19 match from home.

He said: “Wednesday was really good for us. It was against a young Worcester side but the way that we prepared off the back of a short turn around after the Harlequins game and we made. A few changes to the team.

“They went out there and did their jobs and performed well. It was a bit of a shaky start. We exchanged points for a bit, but it was encouraging to see us take control of the game after that period.

“It feels weird. This has effectively been a normal turn around for me and it feels like forever. I got into the swing of playing quite regularly now so it has been nice, but it has been a good physical rest that I’ve probably needed so I’m ready to perform on Sunday.”
