Burns was there last year at a sweltering Twickenham to see Bath win 27-21 in a fine comeback win but, unfortunately for him, he was in Leicester Tigers green.

With a repeat of the fixture less than two months away, Burns is desperate to sample a winning feeling in one of club rugby’s biggest matches.

“The atmosphere when Bath won was rocking for them, so hopefully it’ll be the same this year – although I wasn’t saying that last year,” said the 27-year-old.

“It’ll be nice for me, especially for me being a Bath boy wearing a Bath shirt, it’ll be a proud day.”

Burns saw Bath storm their way to victory in front secure victory in front of a crowd of over 61,000, with Anthony Watson scoring two second-half tries for the hosts.

“It was a great occasion, the sun was shining and we’re fortunate in The Clash that it’s two very well supported clubs,” he said.

“When you go somewhere like Twickenham it’s such a special day out, you get those who don’t normally come deciding to make the trip up and watch, so we’ll have a great fan base and great support as always, and they can cheer us over the line.

The fly-half may have been a Leicester player last year, but he knows more than most about how deep this rivalry runs and how important victory is.

He said: “It’s history at the end of the day, going back through the 1990s it was the two most successful clubs in England and that’s where the rivalry stems from.

“Every game is pretty intense now, but there’s definitely a bit more bite and a bit more edge when Bath meet Leicester.

“It’s been really good coming back and playing for my home town, it’s a special place for me,” he said.

“The whole romance of Bath is, being my hometown, it’s the team that I grew up supporting and the team that inspired me to want to be a rugby player.

“So to be wearing the same shirt as guys like Mike Catt is great for me, I just want to do the shirt proud and do my city proud.”
