The RFU ACE League pits the partner state schools or colleges of all the Premiership clubs against each other in a National League of exceptional quality. Bishop Wand School are affiliated to London Irish.

Over the previous four games, the team have played very well in phases, but as a newly formed team, there was always likely to be disappointing patches while systems, structures and team cohesion bed-in. In addition, the incredible physicality of the league inevitably takes its toll, and the depth of the squad becomes tested. Such was the case this week, with injury disruption to some key players creating opportunities for others to shine.

In early phases of the game a strong Bishop Wand team exploited Beechen’s poor defensive organisation and stretched to an early lead. Eventually the team began to knit and a brilliant try by Rory Crum created by his centre partner Henry Bartlett got them back in the game.

Beechen went into the break 19-7 down, but with some momentum at least. Five changes from the bench brought additional energy and hooker Kacey Pike was rewarded with a try from close range. Bishops replied immediately with an almost identical pick and go try of their own.

While Beechen were chasing the game in the last quarter Bishops capitalised on a loose pass to intercept and run the length of the field. This proved to be a devastating blow, but to their great credit, Beechen rallied with two late tries to at least secure a double bonus point. First lock James Boyle capped a fine game with a try from a clever line-out move, then fellow debutant Toby Lock scored a stunning individual try down the right wing. Raff Weston kicked the conversion from out wide to secure the points at the final whistle.

Although disappointed with aspects of their performance, there was great heart and spirit exhibited by the young team and the bonus points may prove critical in the long run.

Next week, Exeter College are the visitors to the Bath school. It is the final game of stage one of the league format. The league is then redrawn for stage two with further games after half term.
