Each month, we will post highlights of our work within the Community to keep you up-to-date with all delivery at a grassroots level. March has been an extremely busy month for our Bath Rugby Community Team, with some incredible work being carried out across Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset.

Land Rover Tour Event

On Saturday 30th March, Trowbridge RFC and Royal Wootton Bassett RFC were welcomed to Farleigh House to take part in the inaugural Land Rover Rugby Tour event.

Six teams across Land Rover’s affiliated clubs took part in a touch rugby festival in the stunning grounds of Farleigh House led by Bath Rugby’s community coaches and supported by an array of Land Rover’s International Rugby ambassadors. Bath and England winger Anthony Watson, Wales duo Leigh Halfpenny and George North, Scotland centre Huw Jones and World Cup winner Lewis Moody were surprise guests on the day, helping out with the coaching clinics throughout the morning.

As part of this event, there was an incredible opportunity for each participating child to enter the Land Rover Rugby World Cup 2019 mascot competition. One child from each of the Land Rover affiliated rugby clubs were selected as winners and will mascot at one of the England, Scotland and Wales World Cup match in Japan.

The search for Bath Rugby Community Champion is on…

The search for Bath Rugby's Community Champion is on. We are looking for you to nominate someone at your school or club who goes above the call of duty to support their team and has made a valuable contribution to the local community. Every school and club based in Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset are eligible to submit their recommendations, so it's your time to vote for your teacher, coach, player or volunteer.

A panel of judges at Bath Rugby consisting of coaches, players and Community staff will shortlist three deserving candidates before going to a public vote.

The 2019 Bath Rugby Community Champion and their guest will be invited to attend the Bath Rugby Annual Awards Dinner at the Pavilion in Bath and will be presented with their award in front of a star-studded audience.

All nominations must be submitted by 23:59 on Sunday 7th April.

Schools Coaching Hub in Bath

Bath Hub is an accessible opportunity for schools and children in the local area of Bath to participate in a variety of sports in the HUB of the city. We have worked in partner with Bath Rec Limited for the past 3 years delivering high quality tag rugby to children aged 7-11.

Each year we work with 360 children and deliver a festival to all pupils in the summer term. Each term, schools visit Bath Hub on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons across 6 weeks to receive sessions from specialist coaches at The Rec, Bath Cricket Club and Sports Centre.

Our Schools Coordinator Lewis Palmer said, “It’s fantastic being able to give children in the Bath area the opportunity to play sport at the home of Bath Rugby. Bath Rec Limited use their facilities to give children these opportunities to play a variety of sports and being a partner enables us to engage with these schools in a positive way”

Across all school delivery, it’s been a very busy start to term 4 with over 100 hours of delivery teaching over 400 kids across Primary and Secondary Schools.

Women’s rugby to take centre stage at Twickenham

The half-time matches have been arranged by Bath Rugby Foundation and the Bath Rugby Community team.

The rate of change in women’s sports is one of the most exciting trends in the sports industry, with participation rates in rugby growing each year. Bath Rugby deliver coaching sessions to girls across a number of different programmes within Primary and Secondary Schools around the local catchment area. It’s clear to see the growth in participation and enjoyment across all ages, as previous barriers have now been removed.

This academic year, Royal High School have begun working with Bath Rugby coaches during their curriculum Physical Education lessons. The girls have all demonstrated Rugby’s core values (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship) and are being awarded for their fantastic work and willingness to learn. We wish the girls well and hope they get to score a try on the hallowed turf!

Bath Rugby 7s Club Festival confirmed for a fourth year running

The Bath Rugby 7s Club Championship in association with Dyson returns for a fourth year to the Rec next month.

To reflect the growing popularity of the tournament, a preliminary competition will be held at the Rec on Saturday 13th April. For the first time, there will be eight U15 girls’ teams taking part with 16 U14 boys’ teams going head-to-head in the battle to qualify for Finals Day. Finals Day will take place on Sunday 5th May, with four boys’ teams and four girls’ teams headlining at the Rec ahead of Bath Rugby’s final home game of the season against Wasps. All finalists will receive a match ticket courtesy of Dyson to get behind the Blue, Black and White.

Bath Rugby’s Ruaridh McConnochie, an Olympic Rugby Sevens silver medallist, said, “This competition is a great way of recognising the talent we have at grassroots level. Rugby Sevens gave me the grounding in the sport, with experiences and memories which will last a lifetime. I’m sure that those taking part will look back with similar fondness when they get a chance to play at the home of Bath Rugby.”
