Bath Rugby’s Ruaridh McConnochie is excited by the prospect of facing Leinster Rugby this afternoon at the Aviva Stadium (kick-off 17:30)
The European Champions came away with a 10-17 victory at the Rec last weekend, but believes the team have taken a number positives ahead of the return fixture in Dublin.
McConnochie said: “The feeling of excitement is definitely there. The experience was incredible and we came off feeling we had put in a performance. At the same time we were frustrated as we had left a few chances out there that were definitely for the taking. This week it’s just that sheer excitement - we are good enough, we just have to put them to the sword.”
“Coming off the back of the Sale match, we questioned ourselves and we needed to improve on that. Going into Leinster it was just a massive improvement in the performance across the board. I think our attacking play was really good and we created those chances. Now it’s finishing those opportunities going into the game today.”
A crowd of over 40,000 is expected at the Aviva Stadium, and McConnochie is relishing the prospect of another electric atmosphere despite the forecasted blustery conditions.
“It’s pretty incredible going to the home of the European Champions. Playing at the Aviva Stadium as well, the atmosphere is going to be awesome coming off the back of the reception we had last weekend. It was just incredible so hopefully we will notch it up another gear.”
“You’re in the game for matches like these. There is no bigger match than against arguably the best club in the Northern Hemisphere, maybe the world. It’s the games you want to play as a rugby player and I’m really looking forward to it.”
McConnochie has settled into his role of full-back recently, starting against both Sale Sharks and Leinster in recent weeks, and he’s looking forward to continuing his development after making the transition from the sevens circuit in the summer.
“I’m getting settled at that position. I think there are little areas, positioning wise that I’m learning. I think full-back suits my game better, but I’m happy to play wherever, whether it’s wing or full-back.
“I try and sit down with Darren Edwards and go through little learning points, but that continual growth mind-set for me is massive.”
