Ewels buoyed by fight in Leicester victory

21 May 2019

Charlie Ewels was pleased with the way Bath Rugby fought back to secure a bonus-point victory against Leicester on Saturday, which guarantees the Blue, Black and White a place in next season’s Heineken Champions Cup.

Bath overturned an 11-point half-time deficit, with Beno Obano and Jacques van Rooyen crossing in the final quarter to complete a narrow 31-32 triumph at Welford Road.

The 23-year-old said: “It was huge. You have to stick to your systems and structure. Ultimately when you’re fatigued at that point in the game, it’s the belief in those things and doing those well that wins you those games.

“Earlier in the season much to ours and the supporters’ frustration, it was those games that we were losing. We were the team on the receiving end of that and losing games in the last five minutes, so to have this game and the Wasps game and come through and win right at the death is really encouraging.

“We spoke around half-time about them (Leicester Tigers) winning the collisions and sticking to what we do, as we never really got into our flow in that first-half. I don’t think there was a turning point as such - we backed ourselves and our systems and we stayed in the fight.”

Ewels admits that leaving qualification to the final day wasn’t ideal, but believes that having top flight European competition next season can act as a building block for the Club moving forwards.

He said: “It’s massive (to qualify for the Heineken Champions Cup). That is what we spoke about in the week – it is where the Club wants to be and where it strives to be.

“To attract players and to play at the level we want to be at, we need to be in the Champions Cup. We would have liked to have secured it earlier in the season, but it was really important that we did it today.”

With Bath saying goodbye to a number of the coaching and playing staff on the weekend, Ewels was pleased deliver to give those departing the perfect send-off.

“There’s a number of people and players leaving at the end of this season, so it was important to get the result. We sent them off in the right way.

“We can’t thank them enough as players for what they have done, and we hope that they go on to be successful in the future and they have been a massive part in that.”
