United swat Wasps at Maidenhead

Bath United beat Wasps A 15-31 on Maidenhead RFC’s artificial pitch last night.

It was an error-strewn performance from both sides, mainly down to the increasingly greasy ball. Despite the wet conditions, fly-half Ollie Devoto made a break in the third minute to put wing Anthony Watson in under the posts. Devoto then converted the try which he had set up. 0-7.

Wasps saw a long penalty kick from fly-half Harry Sheppard sail through the posts, allowing them to register their first points of the game. It was United’s pack, though, which won the day for the visitors. An experienced front row, reinforced by an Academy-dominated second and back row (with a helping of the destructive Dave Sisi at number eight) won United two penalty tries – both from 5m scrums, both converted by Devoto.

United had Wasps on the rack early in the second half, but a sure-fire try was instead intercepted by Sheppard, who made good grounds before offloading to wing Josh Bassett to take honours. With the try converted by Sheppard, United now had an 11-point lead. 10-21.

Play became a deadlock for long phases of the second half, with both sides continuing to knock on with alarming regularity. It came down to replacement United wing George Wacokecoke to touch down in the right-hand corner when Wasps showed gaps out wide and the visitors had chipped through. The conversion missed, United led 10-26.

Wasps played the waiting game following United’s try, building momentum patiently in the visitors’ half. When they finally bundled over, it was openside Thomas Young (son of Wasps head coach Dai Young) who scored. 15-26.

Six minutes from time, Rich Lane was given clear passage to the try line after outside centre Max Clark had eyed the gap. The angle was too acute for replacement scrum-half Will Homer, but the try itself gave United the final impetus to see out the match.
