Somerset levelled by United at the Rec

Bath United beat a feisty Somerset County XV 34-7 this evening in what turned out to be a scrappy affair at the Rec.

It took United twelve minutes to draw first blood, with fly-half Brett Herron cutting a cute angle back inside in Somerset's 22, before the ball was shipped out wide for second row Tom Ellis to dive over for United's first try. Scrum-half Jennings's attempt hit the upright. 5-0.

In the 18th minute, some sloppy ball-handling from the home side ironically benefited United, with Jennings gathering the spilled ball to score under the posts. He converted his own try to give United a 12-0 lead.

Things hadn't gone according to plan for United in the opening stages, but with three minutes to spare in the first half, powerhouse wing Olly Woodburn ran through two opponents to score United's third try. Although it was a fine attempt, the conversion was missed by Jennings. 17-0.

With three minutes gone in the second half, Jake Henry made light work of the covering Somerset defence out wide as he sidestepped his way to United's fourth try of the evening, with Jennings's attempt to add the extras falling short. 22-0.

Just past the hour mark, United looked to be in for their fifth try, only for Somerset to intercept. It was only down to the breathtaking pace of Woodburn that they failed to score from that move, the wing chasing back to take down the breakaway player. Nonetheless, the movement ended in a penalty try for Somerset, with Herron sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on near United's line. 22-7.

After umpteen attempts to break through were stifled by unforced errors, United scored their fifth try of the match through a driving maul. Rich Lane struck a superb conversion to take United 22 points clear with only seven minutes left on the clock. 29-7.

Two minutes from time, Herron displayed some wizardry to bamboozle Somerset's defence and touch down for United's sixth try. Lane failed to add the extras, and the stop-start match ended soon thereafter.
