Stars of tomorrow shine at Corsham RFC Aviva tag festival

7 April 2014

The Bath Rugby Community Team were at Corsham  RFC recently to put children from 10 primary schools in the Corsham area through their paces as they continue their education up the rugby ladder.

The tag rugby festival, which forms an important part of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme, brought together over 150 children aged 7/8 and gave them the perfect opportunity to implement their newly-acquired skills in an engaging and fun environment.

Kim Oliver, Community Coach said: “It was a fantastic day all round. The kids had an amazing day with everyone getting involved. It was brilliant to see the improvements they’ve made throughout the festival with some of them only just starting to get to grips with the game. The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme is a way of incorporating everyone into the sport regardless of prior ability, skill or knowledge.”

Louise Pugh, teacher at Churchfields Primary School, added  “It was fantastic to see the faces of the children as they were getting involved in the day. All of the children have a mixed range of ability, however with the help of the Bath Rugby Community team they have improved not only in confidence but also skill. It was lovely to have a friendly environment such as Corsham RFC for the children to be based, where some of my pupils have said they may go and join in on the transition day.”

In its fourth season, the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme represents a significant investment (£2 million) by Aviva into the grass roots level of the game. Resources will go towards supporting over 1,200 teachers in 650 schools across the country whilst also providing all the kit necessary to play tag rugby. Aligned to the national curriculum and PE syllabus and designed to unearth the next generation of rugby stars, the number of children who will have taken part in the scheme by the end of this season is enough to fill Twickenham stadium.

Massive thanks to Corsham RFC for the use of their superb facilities. A special thanks to Wendy Ewart from Corsham RFC for all her help with the organisation of the festival.
