More than 450 men and boys stepped out this weekend to take part in the second Bath Men's Walk, doubling the numbers from last year and doubling the amount raised.
The eight-mile event, which starts at Winsley and finishes at the Rec in Bath, is organised by Bath Rugby Foundation and Dorothy House Hospice Care. This year, thanks to the efforts of all who took part, they hope to have raised £40,000 to help their work in the local community.
Bath Men's Walk, which is sponsored by event partner Thrings, was officially started by ITV weatherman, Bob Crampton. Bath Rugby stars David Wilson, Micky Young and Ben Williams also joined the walkers at the start to show their support.
Following a few inspirational words from former England and Bath rugby player, David Trick and Dorothy House Chair of Trustees, Simon Coombe and of course, Bob Crampton, the walkers set off from Winsley across fields and canal path to the Rec, with an 'unofficial' watering stop at 'The George', Bathampton!
The walkers took approximately two hours to complete the route and were greeted with a well deserved pie and a pint ready to watch the big game, France Vs England in the 2014 Six Nations Campaign, on the big screen.
David Flatman, former England and Bath Rugby player, who took part in the walk said, "I like a good walk, but they generally involve a stop every few hundred yards, a packet of organic crisps from the local shop and my panting dog. This might have been more of an aerobic challenge, but we all got it done for a wonderful cause. And charity aside, that pie and pint at the end of the walk was all the motivation a man ought to need."
Jenny Steele, Communications Manager at Dorothy House said, "We are thrilled that the walk has been another fantastic success, and we would like to thank all those that took on the challenge for us. It has been great to be a part of two well respected local charities coming together to make a difference to our community and to put the Bath Men's Walk firmly on the Bath calendar for years to come".
Halena Coury, Head of Fundraising for Bath Rugby Foundation said, "Bath Men's Walk is always such a fun event and this year was no exception. It was a sell out, with a huge turn out on the day despite the threat of bad weather! Thanks to all the walkers who helped create such a fantastic atmosphere throughout, even when England lost to France in the big game! Their support allows our charities to continue doing our work in the community. Thanks also to the sponsors, Thrings, Money Wise, Wadworth, Thatchers and Pieminister, who help make this event a reality and provided the all important pies and pints at the end. We plan to make next year even bigger, so put the date in your diary for Bath Men's Walk 2015 and book early!"
