We reaped the rewards of going toe-to-toe with Falcons from the start - Dunn

14 March 2021

Tom Dunn believes Bath Rugby reaped the rewards of matching Newcastle Falcons’ physical approach from the off, coming away from the North East with a 38-19 victory.

The Blue, Black and Whites set their stall out early on, dominating in every area and enjoying success due to a united, connected 80-minute performance.

Newcastle are not often upset at Kingston Park with the win Bath’s first at the venue since 2015 and just the Falcons’ second loss since May 2019.

“It’s all about pressure coming up here,” Dunn said in his post-match interview.

“They’re a decent outfit; they’re gritty, physical, they get on top of you and try to bully you. You’ve got to match them and go toe-to-toe from the start. That’s where we got our rewards from.

“It’s about the system, all about staying in it and expressing yourself within it. That’s what I think we did.”

Amongst all the positives on a bitterly cold afternoon, Ruaridh McConnochie made his 50th appearance for Bath while homegrown Senior Academy prop Arthur Cordwell came on for his Gallagher Premiership debut.

The two milestones form part of a wholesome memory for the squad with Dunn expressing his pride in fellow front rower Cordwell earning his opportunity.

“He deserves this,” he said of the youngster.

“He’s actually a very intelligent man – I think he’s doing Physics! He’s actually tough and really gritty. You often get front rowers who are weirdos and he’s 100% a weirdo!

“I’m very proud of him.”
