Local Sporting Stars Compete for Bath Rugby Foundation ‘Superstars’ Title

16 December 2013

Local sporting stars, including Paralympians Ben Rushgrove and Kate Grey, Olympians Jason Gardener and Heather Fell and rugby legends Mike Catt, Jon Hall, Danny Grewcock and David Flatman came together at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre to compete in the annual Bath Rugby Foundation Superstars Challenge this weekend.

Superstars is a fun yet tough sporting event which brings together local businesses, sports superstars and schools, with the aim of raising funds for Bath Rugby Foundation. The proud joint winners of Superstars 2013 were Team Novia - Wii Unfit, which included sporting superstar Izzy Noel-Smith and were supported by St. Andrew's Church of England School, and Team Vibe Fitness, which included sporting superstar David Flatman and were supported by St. Gregory's Catholic School.

Fifteen teams in total took up the Superstars challenge, each consisting of five participants from local businesses, including Thrings, Money Wise IFA, Nine Feet Tall, Rygor, Wessex Water, Bath Rugby, Novia and Vibe Fitness.

Each team also included a local sports superstar, with other sporting legends taking part including rugby star Scott Hobson, Bath Rugby forwards coach Neal Hatley and ladies rugby stars Kim Oliver (former England Ladies), Caryl Thomas (Wales Ladies) and Izzy Noel-Smith (England Ladies).

All teams taking part undertook ten gruelling sporting challenges, including a 1000m cycle sprint, 500m individual row, a tyre pull, 20m sprint and a bleep test.

They were cheered on by a number of enthusiastic local schools, including Ivy Lane Primary School St. Augustine's Catholic School, Briarwood, Matravers Secondary, St Michael's School, St Gregory's Catholic School and Threeways. Each school was allocated a team and superstar to support and all created banners to be entered into the best banner competition. The 2013 winner of the best banner competition was Ivy Lane Primary School.

The funds raised from this event will go towards the delivery of an Inclusion Fun Day taking place in the summer of 2014.

David Flatman, Superstar in the joint winning Vibe Fitness team, said, "Taking part in the Foundation's Superstars event is always a pleasure. Well, actually it's so hard that my lungs hurt for days afterwards, but the joy it brings to all those kids makes it worth every bit of effort. A brilliant event - can't wait for next year!"

Halena Coury, Bath Rugby Foundation Head of Fundraising, said, "After an incredibly popular and fiercely fought out competition last year we have brought back Superstars and made it an annual event on the Bath Rugby Foundation fundraising calendar. We are extremely grateful to all the sporting superstars, companies and schools taking part this year. The challenge is a great opportunity to bring all the community together for a fun event, while raising money to allow us to host our Inclusion Fun Day in the summer again. As expected, it was an extremely close fought competition this year. While everyone had a great time, I'm sure there were some sore bodies the morning after!"

The event was held in association with Vibe Fitness, Bath – an energetic training facility located in central Bath providing group exercise and one on one training experiences to unlock your true potential

Bath Rugby Foundation is an independent charity which aims to enhance the lives of children and young people in the local community through sport
