Consultation over new plans for the Rec

23 September 2013

Bath Rugby can confirm that we will hold separate consultation events before submitting a planning application for any development at the Recreation Ground.

The first of these consultation events will take place on Friday 27th September from 12noon to 19.00 and Saturday 28th September from 12noon to 18.00 in a marquee at The Rec.

While it is intended that the matchday capacity will be increased within the existing footprint used by the Club, the most notable improvement will be to the appearance of The Rec and the facilities on offer, which currently fall far below Premiership, not to mention international, standards.

A design team made up of Wilkinson Eyre Architects, city engineering consultants Buro Happold, environmental design firm Nicholas Pearson Associates, law firm Withy King, Boyer Planning and project management specialist Capita Symonds have been tasked with drawing up detailed proposals to incorporate the space within our existing footprint. From this, we will look to submit a planning application late in the year following consultation with the public.

The East Stand will continue to be a temporary stand that is removed each summer to allow the Rec to be used for other sport, leisure and cultural events. The West Stand, North Terrace and Clubhouse will be demolished and redeveloped to vastly improve the three permanent stands.

At this stage, there will be no images of what an arena would look like, but information at the first exhibition will include a site plan showing the overall size of the proposed development. Feedback from this exhibition will help to inform the design process. Detailed plans and designs will be shown at a second exhibition later in 2013, before any application is submitted.

Chief Executive Nick Blofeld said: "This new facility is for the use of the whole city, with the rugby ground and home of Bath Rugby just one of many functions. With that in mind, it is appropriate that we consult the people of Bath in the process of drawing up a design to be submitted as a planning application. The Rec is one of the most recognised grounds in world rugby, with Bath Rugby having played there since 1894. We celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2015 and it is fitting that these plans are now being worked up ahead of that historic milestone."
