University of Bath beaten in Loughborough battle

12 December 2019

Loughborough University put on a dominating second-half performance as University of Bath suffered a 43-19 defeat on an icy evening at the University of Bath Sports Training Village.

In an evenly fought first-half with both teams enjoying periods of pressure, it was Loughborough who struck first in the 21st minute, Suvwe Obano – brother of Bath Rugby prop Beno – breaking through a couple of tackles to touch down. [0-5]

Tom Rowland burrowed over shortly after from a well constructed driving maul at the other end to level the scores. [5-5]

Loughborough took the lead again leading into the break, as Cameron Boon’s close-range try was converted by Tom Ffitch in the 38th minute. [5-12]

The sides went into the half-time break on an even keel as Team Bath looked to put their stamp on proceedings in the second period.

The first try of the second-half came shortly after the break, and it proved to be a pivotal score as Obano again proving too strong as rumbled his way over to leave Ffitch with a simple conversion. [5-19]

The visitors were now finding gaps in the home defence and it was a blistering break from flanker Austin Wallis that created the platform for prop Nick Rigby to race through for Loughborough’s bonus-point try, again converted by Ffitch. [5-26]

Locks Boon and Tom Manz also went over for converted tries, either side of a Ffitch penalty, as Loughborough surged into a 43-5 lead. [5-43]

Despite the scoreline, the University of Bath kept battling away and managed to score two tries in the last three minutes of the game, courtesy of replacements Harry Sturge and Ed Rimmer, both converted by Tom Pittman. [19-43]

Team Bath have one more game before the Christmas break, a trip to Cardiff Met next Wednesday (December 18th, 18:30).
