Cowan earns place in Wales U20 squad

27 January 2022

Thompson Cowan has earned a call-up to the Wales Under-20s squad for the upcoming U20 Six Nations.

The Bath Rugby Academy back rower earned a contract with the club in the summer for his effort and determination in pre-season, and has continued his development over the past six months.

He made his Premiership debut against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road – a match he was due to attend as a fan with his Loughborough University friends!

Cowan is one of 28 uncapped players in a 38-player squad selected by Head Coach Byron Hayward and could come up against Academy teammates Ewan Richards, John Stewart and Tom Carr-Smith when England host Wales in Round 3.

On his inclusion, Academy Manager Craig Lilley said: “To see Tom develop on his journey through our pathway as a person and a rugby player at Sheldon School and Chippenham RFC and then at Millfield School and Bath Academy has been a pleasure.

“He has shown huge resilience over the years to bounce back from injuries and other disappointments and we are absolutely delighted that Wales have recognised his recent achievements and will give him the opportunity to represent his country in this year’s U20 Six Nations.

“Tom is a very athletic back rower and adds real value both sides of the ball. We are looking forward to seeing how he progresses in the competition and how he can influence the game after some valuable experience in the first team this year.”
